Charles Paddock Zoo, now operating as the Central Coast Zoo, sits on five wooded acres inside Atascadero Lake Park and is home to more than 200 animals across roughly 60 to 100 species, including fossa, red pandas, lemurs, meerkats and burrowing owls. It is the only AZA-accredited zoo in San Luis Obispo County, meaning animal care meets a nationally recognized welfare standard. Families can walk the grounds in about an hour or stay for a full day, combining the zoo visit with the park's playgrounds, open lawns, walking paths and lake paddleboat rentals. A gift shop on site sells refreshments, souvenirs and has strollers available. Admission is $13.50 for Atascadero residents, seniors, military, families and students with ID, and the zoo is open daily 10am to 4pm in summer and Thursday through Monday the rest of the year.
