About this place
The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, operated by the nonprofit Zoo Foundation, sits about six miles from the beach and is home to a wide variety of animals, from lions to monkeys, each with its own name and history. Families can walk through the exhibits to see and hear the animals, and for an extra fee can book an Animal Encounters session for an up-close, one-on-one visit with select animals. The zoo is open daily from 9am to 4pm, closing only on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Groups of 15 or more, including school and daycare groups, can get discounted admission, with teachers and bus drivers admitted free and reservations required.
