About this placeThis is the oldest public aquarium in the country, run by NOAA Fisheries in Woods Hole since 1875, and it focuses on marine life found in Northeast and Mid-Atlantic waters. Families can walk through self-guided exhibits showing about 100 species of local fish, marine mammals, and sea turtles, and kids can handle crabs, sea stars, whelks, shells, and egg casings at the touch tanks. Visitors are also allowed behind the scenes to watch staff feed animals, clean tanks, and maintain the life support systems, with most visits lasting 20 to 30 minutes. Admission is free, but there is no off-street parking, so families often use metered street parking, the Cape Cod bus service, or bikes in busy summer months. Note that the aquarium is currently closed through early 2027 for foundation repairs and exhibit renovations, so check before planning a visit.
