The collection ranges from ancient Greek and Roman pieces through European and American paintings to contemporary work, including notable holdings of Hudson River School landscapes, Impressionist paintings, Surrealist art, and Baroque masterpieces. Families can explore galleries devoted to decorative arts, prints, textiles, and firearms, with interactive displays encouraging closer looking. The museum, founded in 1842 and opened to the public in 1844, recently completed a major renovation that added new gallery spaces and made all exhibitions accessible at once.
