About this place

Staatsburgh State Historic Site, was the elegant country home of Ogden Mills and his wife Ruth Livingston Mills. Built in 1832 by Morgan Lewis, the 3rd Governor of New York, and his wife, Gertrude Livingston, the house was inherited by their great-granddaughter, Ruth Livingston Mills in 1890. Soon after, Ruth and her husband, the prominent financier and philanthropist, Ogden Mills, commissioned the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White to expand and upgrade the house. After completion it had been transformed into the magnificent Beaux-Arts mansion that today is enjoyed by the many who visit each year. The Mission of Friends of Mills of Staatsburgh, a 501 (c) 3 organization, is to promote the preservation, restoration and interpretation of Sraarsburgh, one of the finest surviving great estates in the country. Our aim is to inspire and foster learning about the time period of the American Renaissance and to bring it to life through the lens of Ogden Mills and Ruth Livingston Mills, while also honoring the many people they employed, essential for the support of the lavish lifestyles during the Gilded Age. *Tour reservations must be made at Photo credit: Pieter Estersohn
