About this place

The Museum at the John Brown House is a National Historic Landmark mansion in Providence run by the Rhode Island Historical Society, where families can tour period rooms filled with furniture, artwork, silver and textiles while learning about Rhode Island's history up to 1860. Exhibits cover topics like colonial settlement, the state's role in the slave trade, and its early trade with China, and one highlight is John Brown's carriage, nicknamed Washington's Chariot after a supposed ride by President Washington. The museum offers free school tours and discounted group tours, plus a free Bloomberg Connects app with audio guides and behind-the-scenes content for visitors exploring on their own. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, veterans and students, and free for children under 10, RIHS members, and EBT cardholders with up to four guests. Free parking is available off Charlesfield Street near the corner of Benefit Street, with the visitor entrance around back through the courtyard gate.
