About this placeGladys Porter Zoo is a 31-acre zoological and botanical park in Brownsville that houses around 1,600 animals across roughly 377 species, laid out in four geographic sections covering Africa, Asia, Tropical America and Indo-Australia. A visit along the roughly three-quarter-mile path lets kids see a Herpetarium, an Aquarium, a Tropical America free-flight Aviary, Macaw Canyon, Bear Grottos and a Komodo dragon exhibit. In the Small World area, children can get close to and touch domesticated animals in a hands-on contact yard, and there is also a nursery area. The zoo, accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1978, is also involved in breeding and conservation programs for endangered species like Kemp's ridley sea turtles and Western lowland gorillas, giving families a mix of animal viewing and conservation-focused exhibits.
