About this placeThis Hendersonville museum sits beside Johnson Field and displays 25 historic aircraft that trace Western North Carolina's aviation heritage, mostly from the Golden Age of flying around World War II. Kids can walk right up to the planes and even climb into the cockpit at the sport flyer exhibit to pretend they're piloting. Many volunteers are pilots or veterans who are happy to answer questions, and visitors can sometimes watch aircraft restoration happening on site or see a plane taking off. Admission is free, and the museum also hosts seasonal events, such as a Labor Day weekend gathering with visiting helicopter rides.
