About this place
Washington Park Zoo sits across from the Lake Michigan shoreline in Michigan City and has been welcoming visitors since 1928. Spread over 15 acres of hills and tree-lined trails, it doubles as a wildlife sanctuary, caring for exotic animals rescued from difficult situations or unable to survive in the wild, with species representing Australia, Africa, Asia, North America and South America. Kids can join animal encounters and Zoo Camps, and families can grab a bite at the on-site Peacock Cafe. The zoo is open daily, generally 10 am to 4 pm on weekdays and until 5 pm on weekends, with last entry an hour before closing, and a new all-season indoor aviary exhibit is planned for spring 2027.
