Sebring Historical Society | Charles F. Weigle House Museum & Archives

1989 Lakeview Dr, Sebring, FL 33870, USA

About this place

Sebring Historical Society is home to both the Charles F. Weigle House Museum and the Sebring Historical Society Archives. Charles F. Weigle House Museum, located at 1989 Lakeview Drive, is a historic property where docents lead tours, tell the history of Sebring and Highlands County, Florida. Our archives, at 321 West Center Avenue, collect printed material and artifacts dealing with local history. We have an extensive genealogy library collection with books and records. Dr. Charles F. Weigle was a well-known evangelist and songwriter during the 20th Century. He was also a personal friend of George Sebring, founder of our city. The Charles F. Weigle House Museum, located at 1989 Lakeview Drive was the home of Dr. Weigle. He built this historic house on Lake Jackson in 1922 on a lot that is adjacent to where the Sebring home once stood. The 1920s was a period of great expansion for the community. The home is a typical Florida bungalow of that period. Finally, the Weigle House also houses a small gift shop with postcards, books, and memorabilia related to the city of Sebring and the history of the state of Florida. The Sebring Historical Society’s museum collection tells the story of the people, history, and culture of Sebring and Highlands County through an array of exciting and interesting exhibits. Special displays highlight Highlands Hammock State Park, Florida’s first state park, the Civilian Conservation Corps, The WWII Army Air Corp B 17 training school at Hendricks Field, and the internationally renowned 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race which has been held annually since 1952. In addition, although the Sebring is no longer standing, a room in the museum displays Sebring family pictures and artifacts that celebrate the special friendship between the Sebring and Weigle families.
