About this placeThe Detroit Historical Society runs the Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown, where kids can walk through the recreated Streets of Old Detroit and explore hands-on galleries covering the city's industrial history, culture, and growth over time. Rotating exhibits include an automotive showcase, a photography exhibit called LENI, and a display on the Detroit Red Wings' centennial, alongside longtime permanent favorites. The Society also operates the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, focused on maritime heritage, including the William Clay Ford Pilot House exhibit. Both museums are Certified Autism Centers, offer self-led tours for school groups by advance arrangement, and have discounted admission for seniors, students ages 13-17, military, first responders, and educators, with free membership for residents of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park.
A membership to Detroit Historical Society carries reciprocal admission, so the same card is worth free or discounted entry at other places in these programs.
Reciprocal programs are built for travel and most exclude places close to the one where you hold your membership, so this is worth the most when you are away from home. How reciprocal memberships work
