About this placeThis small history museum in south St. Louis occupies the Des Peres School building, home to the first public kindergarten in the United States, opened in 1873. Kids can peek into the refurbished 1876 kindergarten classroom, which still holds original Froebel teaching materials called Gifts of Occupation. Exhibits include a Heritage Room with 19th and early 20th century household furnishings, a toy and tool display sometimes called the Street of Stores or Memory Lane Room, and a collection of Cleveland High School memorabilia such as old uniforms, yearbooks, and photographs. A research library on site holds local newspapers, maps, and historic records for families interested in digging deeper into the neighborhood's past. The building is fully wheelchair accessible with an elevator, and visitors needing the accessible entrance should park on Iron Street and use the side door.
A membership to Carondelet History Museum / Susan Blow’s Kindergarten carries reciprocal admission, so the same card is worth free or discounted entry at other places in these programs.
Reciprocal programs are built for travel and most exclude places close to the one where you hold your membership, so this is worth the most when you are away from home. How reciprocal memberships work
